Forming Adverbs: add -ly

Adverbs can describe verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or entire clauses.

Example

Lou sings loudly while he drives.

Adverbs are often formed by adding -ly to an adjective.

Examples

Dan has neat handwriting.

(neat is an adjective describing the noun handwriting)

Dan writes neatly.

(neatly is an adverb describing the verb writes)

When describing a verb, adjective, or adverb, make sure to use an adverb.

Examples

Incorrect:   Sammy stared strange at his puppy.

Correct:       Sammy stared strangely at his puppy.
