When to use however

However connects two different, or contrasting, ideas.

Example

Annie ran; however she was late.

Annie ran contrasts with she was late.

Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses. However is an example of a conjunctive adverb (a.k.a. “THAMO”).

Use however when you connect contrasting ideas.

Examples

Ida wanted to drive to school; however her grandma had borrowed the car.


Carine is allergic to sugar; I, however, would love to try your famous cupcakes.

Note how each of the different THAMOs has a different meaning:
